The bottom line on Johannes Greber, how each claim on this form is rated, and how to work through the rest.

The bottom line

  • Greber was a German Catholic priest who became a spiritist. He describes his first séance, in late summer 1923, in his own book, and the Watchtower quoted his account in 1956. checked
  • He said spirits helped him translate. His own 1937 introduction says that where no manuscript had the text the spirits called correct, "I have used the text as it was given to me by those spirits." checked
  • The Watchtower knew he was a spiritist by 1955–56. In 1956 it wrote that "the spirits in which ex-priest Greber believes helped him in his translation." checked
  • It then cited his translation with approval from 1962 to 1976: for John 1:1 ("the Word was a god") and for Matthew 27:52-53. checked
  • In 1983 it stopped and said it was "improper to make use of a translation that has such a close rapport with spiritism." checked
  • Don't overclaim. The New World Translation printed "a god" in 1950, five years before the Watchtower first mentioned Greber. The documents show the Society leaned on Greber; they don't show the NWT was made from him. Win the Greek first (John 1:1), then use Greber.

How claims are rated

Every claim on this form carries one of four labels, so you know what you can say with confidence.

  • ● Documented. Read in a primary source: a Watchtower publication, or Greber's own book or translation. Say it plainly.
  • ◐ Reported. From a credible secondary source, such as a local historical society or a researcher who quotes the documents, but the primary document wasn't seen for this form. Say "reportedly" and name the source.
  • ○ Interpretation. A conclusion people draw from the documents. Fair to argue, but present it as your reading.
  • ✕ Overclaim. Goes beyond the evidence. Don't say it; a well-read Witness will use it to discredit everything else you say.
  • checked The quote was read in the source listed under Sources.

How to work through it

  1. Learn who Greber was and what he believed (Who he was, His spiritism).
  2. See what his translation actually does with the text (His translation).
  3. Know every time the Watchtower cited him, and how (How the JW used him).
  4. Understand the 1983 reversal and the question it raises (The 1983 reversal).
  5. Add the findings most people never see (Below the surface).
  6. Argue John 1:1 in the right order, then put the questions (John 1:1, In a debate).

Prepared as a debate aid. Claims are labeled Documented, Reported, Interpretation or Overclaim; quotes marked checked were read in the sources listed under Sources. Watchtower quotations are from the Watchtower Online Library. Scripture is quoted from the Legacy Standard Bible unless marked as the King James Version or the New World Translation.
